A field demonstration program on “Orchard establishment of commercial fruit crops’ was conducted in Lumdiengan under Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) on the 09th and 12th August 2024. The main aim of the program was to disseminate technical knowhow on orchard establishment and maintenance of different fruit crops. About fifteen (15 nos.) participants were selected for the program through a series of interactions on the basis of their interests. During a series of discussions and interactions, it was revealed that the farmers in the village had previously cultivated fruit trees such as peach, guava, and local fruit crops; however, they have no experience with the well-planned orchards. Therefore, the participants were exposed to both theory and hands-on demonstration of systematic layout of orchards, pit digging, planting and other operations required for the establishment of orchards. Feedback from the participants has shown that such activities will help in improving their livelihood. The planting materials distributed to the participants were Assam lemon (400 rooted cuttings), Khasi Mandarin (80 grafted plants & 100 seedlings), grafted Peach cv. Partab (100 grafted), cv. Flordaprince (100 grafted), and Guava cv. Megha Supreme (250 grafted). The participants have shown great enthusiasm, and feedback revealed that such a program will help in improving their skills and knowledge on the cultivation of fruit crops for livelihood improvement. The program was coordinated by Dr. Heiplanmi Rymbai, Dr. H.D. Talang, Dr. M.B. Devi, Dr. R. Teja, and Dr. V.K. Verma.
